Laptops for teachers: An evaluation of the TELA scheme in schools (Years 4 to 6)

Get PDF
The purpose of this evaluation was to investigate the impacts of the Laptops for Teachers Scheme (referred to from here as the TELA scheme) on Years 4 to 6 teachers’ work over a period of three years (2004-2006) and to record emerging changes in laptop use. The investigation focused on the Ministry of Education expectation (Ministry of Education, 2004) that teacher access to a laptop for their individual professional use would lead to gains in confidence and expertise in the use of ICTs, to efficiencies in administration, would contribute to teacher collaboration and support the preparation of high quality lesson resources. It was also anticipated that teacher would use their laptop in the classroom for teaching and learning

Parasites of the larch casebearer, Coleophora laricella (Lepidoptera: Coleophoridae), in the West Kootenay area, British Columbia

The parasite complex of the larch casebearer, Coleophora laricella (Hbn.), was investigated in the Kootenay area of British Columbia in 1973 and 1974. Forty-one species of hymenopterous parasites were obtained from rearings of almost 153,000 final-instar host larvae and pupae. In 1973 and 1974, 31 and 24 species, respectively, were reared, with 14 common to both years. Twenty-nine of these, in 24 genera, were confirmed as larch casebearer parasites by individual rearings and by reports in the literature. No parasites were obtained from eggs, needle-mining larvae, or third-instar case-bearing larvae. The highest total percentage parasitism was 17.7% in 1973 and 24.5% in 1974, both at Rossland. In Collection II the Dicladocerus spp. complex comprised 46.0% of the total parasitism in 1973. and 63.8% of the total in 1974: it was the most abundant at four of the eight collecting sites in 1973 and 13 of the 14 sites in 1974. Spilochalcis albifroms (Walsh) comprised 32.8% and 23.5% of the total parasitism in the years 1973 and 1974 respectively; it was most abundant at three collection sites in 1973 and at two in 1974. Mesopolobus sp. constituted 4.9% of the total in 1973 and 9.9% in 1974. Larch case bearer densities in the first collection in 1973 were highest at Fruitvale and Shoreacres with 150 and 130 cases per 100 fascicles respectively; in 1974, the highest host densities in the first collection were at Kootenay Bay and Fruitvale with 48 and 41 cases per 100 fascicles respectively

A Deployment of Spreadsheets

Many steganographers would agree that, had it not been for the appropriate unification of the partition table and cache coherence, the unproven unification of IPv7 and architecture might never have occurred. In fact, few researchers would disagree with the evaluation of evolutionary programming. Our focus here is not on whether the much-touted replicated algorithm for the deployment of forward-error correction by Gupta and White runs in Ω(n) time, but rather on presenting a semantic tool for deploying operating systems (Taw)

The distribution of Coleophora laricella (Hbn.) and its parasites Dicladocerus spp. (D nearcticus Yosh. and D. pacificus Yosh. (Yoshimoto 1976)) and Spilochalcis albifrons (Walsh) in the crowns of western larch were determined for five classes of trees. In open-grown trees more than 7.6 m high, C. laricella densities were greater at 1.5-3.1 m than at 6.1-7.6 m above the ground, on the sunny side of a tree than on the shaded side, and on the outer half than on the inner half of a branch. In open-grown trees 3.0-4.6 m high and in trees forming a closed canopy, only the outer branch halves had significantly greater densities. The only significant variation in parasitism by Dicladocerus spp. occurred between branch halves in open-grown, non- roadside trees more than 7.6 m high, with more parasitism on the inner halves than the outer. Parasitism by S. albifrons was significantly greater at the lower crown level than at the higher in open-grown, closed-canopy, non-roadside trees that were more than 7.6 m high, and on the outer branch half than on the inner half in the same category of tree

The Somatic Genomic Landscape of Glioblastoma

Get PDF
We describe the landscape of somatic genomic alterations based on multi-dimensional and comprehensive characterization of more than 500 glioblastoma tumors (GBMs). We identify several novel mutated genes as well as complex rearrangements of signature receptors including EGFR and PDGFRA. TERT promoter mutations are shown to correlate with elevated mRNA expression, supporting a role in telomerase reactivation. Correlative analyses confirm that the survival advantage of the proneural subtype is conferred by the G-CIMP phenotype, and MGMT DNA methylation may be a predictive biomarker for treatment response only in classical subtype GBM. Integrative analysis of genomic and proteomic profiles challenges the notion of therapeutic inhibition of a pathway as an alternative to inhibition of the target itself. These data will facilitate the discovery of therapeutic and diagnostic target candidates, the validation of research and clinical observations and the generation of unanticipated hypotheses that can advance our molecular understanding of this lethal cancer

School leadership and equity: the case of New Zealand

No full text
Changing demographics have a major impact on schools and societies. This report is a study of how three New Zealand primary schools are working with student populations that are becoming more diverse and increasingly multi-ethnic in nature. One major theme that emerged from interviews with 25 teachers and school leaders was the concept and importance of school culture as community. This theme is presented in this article, with data demonstrating what ‘community’ meant, at the classroom, school and wider society levels, as school leaders sought equity of achievement and the valuing of difference. From snapshots of these three schools located in the North Island of New Zealand, this study provides empirical evidence of the challenges these schools have faced as they have responded to the changing multicultural demographics, within a country that honors its bicultural heritage

Native parasites of the larch casebearer, Coleophora laricella (Lepidoptera: Coleophoridae), in the West Kootenay area of British Columbia

Thirty-two species of parasites and hyperparasites were reared in 1973 from a total of almost 103.000 larch casebearers, Coleophora laricella (Hbn.) collected at eight locations in the West Kootenay area of British Columbia. The two highest casebearer populations were at Fruitvale and Shoreacres. with densities of 150 and 130 cases per 100 fascicles respectively. The highest incidence of parasitism was 17.7% at Rossland. where the host density was just under 100 cases per 100 fascicles. The Dicladocerus spp. complex comprised 40.7% of the total parasitism and was most abundant at Rossland, Arrow Creek. Christina Lake, Sheep's Creek. and Yahk; Spilchalcis albifrons (Walsh) comprised 23.6% of the total and was the most abundant parasite at Shoreacres, Christina Lake, and Fruitvale; and Bracon pygmaeus (Prov.) comprised 6.8% of the total and was the most abundant parasite at Anarchist Summit
